文房具
(ぶんぼうぐ)
Learn 文房具 or 文具 stationery items in Japanese.
文房 is a ‘study’ and 具 is the kanji for ‘tool.’
The word 文房 originally comes from China. The kanji means a ‘room’ (房) for a writer, a ‘literary person’ (文人), which lead to 文房 meaning ‘study.’ In Japan, a study is typically called 書斎.
