【恵方巻 (えほうまき ehōmaki)】fortune roll

恵方巻(えほうまき) is a type of thick sushi roll called 太巻(ふとま)futomaki eaten on 節分(せつぶん) Setsubun to welcome Spring and good fortune for the new season. 節分(せつぶん) meaning seasonal division is on February 3rd, which is the day before the first day of Spring called 立春(りっしゅん).

Some regions have a tradition of eating the 恵方巻(えほうまき)  facing the 恵方(えほう) lucky direction of the year.

A typical futomaki includes seven “縁起(えんぎ)がいい” (engi ga ii) = “good luck” ingredients:

穴子(あなご) (anago = salt-water eel)

きゅうり (kyūri = cucumber)

しいたけ (shiitake mushroom)

人参(にんじん) (ninjin = carrot)

玉子(たまご) (tamago = egg omelet)

かんぴょう (kanpyo = dried calabash)

(さくら) でんぶ (sakura denbu = sweet pink fish flakes)
